Essential workers have stepped up to real challenges to get us all through this crisis. We're right to applaud them from our windows, but many still earn less than they need to live comfortably. The 5th July is the 72nd anniversary of the NHS and it's about time we paid them what they deserve.
All proceeds split 50/50 between NHS Charities Together and the Living Wage Campaign
Stuck at home all alone
Faces only join me on the screen
Anything new? Or nothing to do?
Room behind me an untidy scene
But I'm safe in my flat, I've got to value that
With others bravely flattening the curve
We've followed your advice and though the claps are nice
Maybe we should pay them what they deserve
And give them some masks and stuff
You don't get to call them heroes if you pay them minimum wage
You don't get to call them heroes then turn back and freeze their pay
Support the NHS in public, but then sell it off backstage
You don't get to call them heroes, no you can't have it both ways, no not both ways
Stuck in a rut, need my hair cut
I look like overgrowth personified
Wanna do my bit but how ironic is it?
"Low skilled workers" are far more qualified
While I'm here writing verses, doctors, carers, nurses
Are pushing through the toughest days they'll see
Drivers, firefighters, teacher, social workers, shop staff, cleaners
Without them there is no society
So let's show hard workers some love, yeah?
You don't get to call them heroes if you pay them minimum wage
You don't get to call them heroes then turn back and freeze their pay
Support the NHS in public, but then sell it off backstage
You don't get to call them heroes, no you can't have it both ways, no not both ways
Calling them heroes, I don't see any capes or masks
Just men and women working shifts that are major hard
With no acclaim for tasks with the weight to pass off as low skilled and beneath you
We need you is what you say while you're giving your fake applause
I think they'd be happier with a wage that lasts
So instead of grandstanding platitudes, give the people respect and gratitude!
You don't get to call them heroes if you pay them minimum wage
You don't get to call them heroes then turn back and freeze their pay
Support the NHS in public, but then sell it off backstage
You don't get to call them heroes, no you can't have it both ways, no not both ways
